Custom Orthotics Yorkville

Foot pain can be very disruptive to normal living. The old adage of, you don’t know what you have until it’s gone definitely holds true when you experience a foot injury. What was once an automatic, regular activity such as walking can become quite laboring and painful. There are many reasons you are experiencing foot pain but regardless of the cause, you are probably a candidate for orthotics. Orthotics are used to help put your foot and ankle into the optimal anatomical position, this means that there will be less pressure and force on your joints. Below we will discuss the many uses, conditions, and information to help you understand exactly how orthotics can be beneficial for you!

What are custom orthotics?

Custom orthotics are medical appliances that help fix imbalances that are occurring in your feet. They look like insoles but do so much more than a regular insole because they are custom made just for you. A great way to describe orthotics is to liken them to the effect that glasses have on your eyes; they help decrease the amount of pressure and stress on your body by helping your feet return to their optimal alignment. Custom orthotics help decrease certain movements and help induce other motions so that your feet can get back to homeostasis, by doing this they help get the best position for your foot in relation to your ankle.

What conditions do Custom Orthotics help with?

Custom Orthotics help with a variety of maladies. It is a common misconception that orthotics are used to treat foot pain only, in actuality orthotics can also help with knee pain as well as lower back pain. Below are some of the most common uses for orthotics;

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fascia helps connect your heel to your toes via a very thick band of tissue. When you have inflammation of this band of tissue it is called plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia acts as a shock absorber for your feet. If there is too much pressure being applied on your feet, this can cause the fascia to be injured and thus causes inflammation. The most common symptom of plantar fasciitis is a sharp/stabbing pain at the bottom of your foot, this pain tends to be worse in the mornings. Orthotics are a great way to help treat plantar fasciitis and decrease the reoccurrence of it as they help your foot re-align and decrease pressure on the fascia. It is very important to treat this condition sooner than later as the longer you have it the more likely it is to become a chronic long-lasting condition.

Flat Feet

Flat Feet, also known as pes planus, is common condition suffered by many people. Flat feet is a result of over-pronation in which the middle arches of both feet flatten out and results in the ankles sinking towards each other. As the longitudinal arch collapses, the structures of the feet fall victim to your body weight which puts strain on the muscles, ligaments and tendons of your feet. Pes planus is one of the conditions that has a extremely high success rate with custom orthotics. By building an arch support custom made to your feet, you can provide a supplemental arch and truly relieve the pressure on the structure of your feet.

Achilles Tendonitis

Achilles Tendonitis is an inflammation of the Achilles tendon. This is a very common injury and is usually seen if you are a runner. The most common symptom of Achilles tendonitis is a sharp pain in the back of the heel. Orthotics can help decrease the pressure on this tendon and help you recover faster.

Metatarsalgia

Metatarsalgia is a pain felt at the ball of your foot. This is an irritation felt at the metatarsal joints and can make walking very painful. It is usually the cause of an overuse injury and presents as a sharp pain. This pain is usually aggravated by activities such as running and jumping. Custom orthotics are a great way to for you help alleviate the symptoms caused by metatarsalgia.

Morton’s Neuroma

This is a very painful condition which presents itself usually between the third and fourth toes. The symptoms of this are a feeling of burning in between the toes, or the feeling of as though you are standing on a pebble. This condition is commonly seen in people who wear high heels. If you are experiencing this type of pain it is something that orthotics has been shown to help with.

Low back pain/S.I joint pain

Most people will experience low back pain at one point or another in their life. However, it has been shown that poor foot mechanics can potentially cause low back. With poor foot mechanics such as collapsed arches, the knees tilt in-words, altering the pelvis and putting extra strain on the low back. Patients who suffer from low back pain have had great results and relief with the use of custom orthotics.

IT Band Syndrome

Your IT band is a connective tissue that runs from the outside of your hip to just below the knee. When the IT band is inflamed this causes more tension along the knee joint and will cause pain on the outside of your knee. It is an overuse injury and is seen most in runners. One of the causes of IT band syndrome is poor foot mechanics. It is thus quite evident that custom orthotics can help treat this condition.

Where can I get Custom Orthotics?

Custom orthotics must be prescribed and dispensed by a healthcare professional. At the Yorkville Sports Medicine Clinic, we are proud to offer completely custom orthotics for all patients who require them. Our team of healthcare specialists conduct a full gait analysis and biomechanical evaluation to ensure that the orthotics that are prescribed are the perfect fit for you. We pride ourselves on helping provide optimal results for our patients and this is just another way we can help.

How long do Custom Orthotics last?

There is no definitive timeline for how long your orthotics will last. They can last anywhere from 1-3 years. The most important factor in determining the length of the orthotic is how long they continue to provide you relief from your symptoms. If your initial symptoms start to re-present themselves it is probably time for a new pair.

How much do orthotics cost?

The price of orthotics can vary depending on if there are any alterations or specifications that are put on them based on your condition. If you would like to inquire about pricing feel free to contact our office and we will be more than happy to assist you.

What does a typical appointment for orthotics consist of?

If you are interested in orthotics our team of healthcare professional will take a very thorough history and physical examination to determine if you need orthotics. If it is the clinical opinion of the Doctor that you do require orthotics and that they will help get you better they will then perform a gait analysis to see how you are walking and a biomechanical evaluation to see how your foot is moving. Once this is done they will take measurements of your feet and along with their recommendations send it out to our high quality and top of the line orthotic labs. It will take about one week to receive your orthotics after you have completed your assessment.
